Casting involves introducing liquefied plastic into a mold and allowing it to solidify. In contrast to molding and extrusion, casting relies on atmospheric pressure to fill the mold rather than using significant force to push the plastic into the mold cavity. Some polymers, even at high temperatures, exhibit viscosities similar to bread dough, making them unsuitable for the casting process. Examples include POM, PC, PP, and other polymers. Casting encompasses processes where monomers, powders, or solvent solutions are poured into molds. They undergo a transformation from liquid to solid through processes such as evaporation, chemical reactions, cooling, or external heat. The final product can be removed from the mold after solidification.

Q: How does the plastic casting process compare to plastic thermoforming?

In plastic casting, a hollow mold is created based on a master pattern, which can be manually sculpted or even 3D printed. The plastic casting material solidifies within the mold, and then the master mold is either burned or removed to form the final part.

On the other hand, in plastic thermoforming, plastic sheets are heated and then pressed between two mold halves to shape the part.
