Core and cavity injection molding
During the injection molding process, cavity and core are utilized, with the cavity forming the mold's concave portion, and the core constituting the mold's convex part. The cavity and core function in pairs, with the cavity also referred to as the female mold, and the core as the male mold. These two mold components are crucial elements within the mold.

The closed volume of the mold cavity is created using (at least) two halves. In a two-part tool mold, these halves are either the core or the cavity.
The core is one side of the tool mold and encompasses the interior or non-decorative surface of the part. The core is also the location of the injector system (in most configurations). In the visual representation above, the interior of the cup is the non-decorative surface, and hence the core shapes the interior of the cup.
The cavity is one side of the tool mold and shapes the exterior or decorative surface of the part. It is typically polished to the surface finish required to represent the final part's desired smoothness. When assembled, the core and cavity leave behind a thin-walled cavity, which will ultimately be filled with molten plastic and allowed to cool.
