Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is a process that utilizes a wire, typically with a diameter ranging from 0.006 to 0.008 inches, charged under high voltage for cutting precise shapes. The wire passes from one wire guide to another, and during the cutting process, it is guided by upper and lower guides. Wire EDM machining offers several advantages, including the ability to make cuts with very high precision, cut internal angles that are close to square, and cut tapers that would be difficult or nearly impossible with other methods. Wire EDM machines are controlled using CNC (Computer Numerical Control). Wire EDM machining is commonly performed in machine shops.
5-Axis Wire EDM Machining:
In addition to conventional wire EDM machining, true 5-axis wire EDM machines combine direct servo control with a rotary indexing system.
In comparison to the 5-axis CNC machining process, 5-axis wire EDM is essentially on different axes. Typically, the tilting of the wire head is considered as 5-axis work. In reality, a true 5-axis EDM machine will have a rotary indexer that can actually rotate the part - even simultaneously during the wire EDM process. More commonly, the rotary indexer is actually used for incremental indexing, such as creating axial slots. A 5-axis wire EDM machine with fine wire capabilities will be able to use a wire with a diameter as small as 0.001 inches and can even achieve sub-micron tolerances.
