There are 3 different types of EDM:

Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining):

Wire EDM is an electro-thermal process that utilizes a fine metal wire (usually copper, 0.006-0.012") immersed in deionized water to cut conductive metals. The wire EDM machine generates discharges between the metal wire and the workpiece, using the heat generated by electrical sparks to cut or "burn through" the material.

Sinker EDM (also known as Conventional or Ram EDM):

Sinker EDM involves pre-shaped electrodes, dielectric fluid, and the erosion of metal material from the workpiece through electrical sparks. In this process, a customized-shaped copper or graphite electrode is used to machine patterns or configurations into any type of conductive material.

Hole Drilling (or Punching) EDM:

Hole Drilling EDM employs small-diameter electrodes (Ø .006 - .050") to drill holes into hardened materials. The drilling EDM machine uses high-pressure dielectric fluid (often deionized water) to pass through the tube for cutting operations and flushing away any eroded debris. The creation of spark gaps is done in the same manner as other EDM processes.

How to Choose the Right EDM Wire

When selecting EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) wire for your project, consider the following factors:

Tensile Strength:

The wire's ability to withstand pulling forces before breaking or yielding.

Fracture Toughness:

The wire's resistance to breaking or fracturing under stress.

Electrical Conductivity:

The wire's capacity to conduct electricity efficiently during the EDM process.

Vaporization Temperature:

The temperature at which the wire material turns into vapor. This is crucial in preventing premature wire breakage during EDM operations.

Hardness:

The wire's resistance to deformation or indentation. It influences the wire's durability and how well it can withstand wear and tear in the machining process.

FAQ

Q: What Is the Difference Between EDM and Wire Cut EDM?

EDM utilizes shaped electrodes made of copper or graphite to cut complex local 3D cavities. The electrodes themselves are machined through conventional processes. Subsequently, the spark electrode is employed in pulsed height mode, allowing for cooling and thorough flushing of the work surface. While EDM is as precise as electrode machining, it permits the shapes of surfaces to become highly intricate through erosion. This method is employed for intricate and precise shapes inside molds and die-casting tools. It can operate on pre-hardened materials, reducing overall costs and allowing for more extreme hardening without tool deformation.

On the other hand, wire EDM machines use continuously fed electrode wires for essentially 2D cutting. This process is well-suited for the precision machining of complex 2D contours in extrusion tools, punches/dies, and the ultra-precise processing of hard materials in aerospace and military applications.

Q: Is It Possible To Wire EDM Stainless Steel?

Yes, it is possible to cut stainless steel using wire EDM. Austenitic grades of stainless steel are particularly well suited because they are heavily work-hardened to start with.

If your specific project requires tight tolerances or positional tolerances (below 0.001 inches), achieving such precision may involve multiple EDM cuts or burns, which, in turn, require more time.

The thickness of the part is also a determining factor in time. The thicker the part, the slower the speed. When the thickness exceeds 4-5 inches, the cutting speed of wire EDM decreases.
