What is Microstamping?

Microstamping, also known as precision stamping or microforming, refers to the production of miniature parts with microscale features. Microstamping is similar to metal stamping, and its downsized processes include micro blanking, micro bending, micro deep drawing, and are further categorized into precision blanking dies, progressive dies, and forming dies.

Microstamped components can also serve as interfaces within the internals of microelectronic components and packaging, or in some cases, act as interfaces on the surface of microelectronic components and packaging. Typically, these small parts will eventually be used in these environments as jumper chips, solder pads, lids, heat sinks, lead frames, wiring tabs, or terminals. Last but not least, precision metal stamped components can also function as substrates, bent parts, or "battery can" components for certain critical electronic or microelectronic packaging and systems.

The advantages of automated microstamping systems include large-scale production capabilities, complex operations, and pressure forming capabilities. This helps reduce labor costs, metal waste, and the need for secondary precision machining processes. The manufacturing process ensures that microstamped components remain intact, eliminating the need for cleaning. The flat, flawless surfaces are well-suited for electroplating and coatings, enhancing the durability of the components.

However, due to mold costs and the expenses associated with trial production, microstamping does not support small-batch production. This significantly increases the per-unit cost, making it economically impractical for low-volume manufacturing.

FAQ

Q: What is the cost of developing a new stamping mold?

The typical cost for new product development ranges from $6,000 to $60,000. This may vary depending on the complexity and requirements of the project. To assist innovators in expediting product launches, half of the mold cost is refunded upon reaching the contracted quantity.

Q: How long does it take to develop a new stamping mold?

About 3-4 weeks
