What Is Stamping

Dec 31, 2023|

Stamping is a forming processing method that relies on presses and molds to apply external force to plates, strips, pipes and profiles to cause plastic deformation or separation, thereby obtaining workpieces (stamping parts) of the required shape and size. Stamping and forging both belong to plastic processing (or pressure processing), and are collectively called forging. The blanks for stamping are mainly hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel plates and strips. 60 to 70% of the world's steel products are plates, most of which are stamped into finished products. The body, chassis, fuel tank, radiator fins of automobiles, boiler drums, container casings, iron core silicon steel sheets of motors and electrical appliances, etc. are all stamped. There are also a large number of stamped parts in products such as instruments and meters, household appliances, bicycles, office machinery, and living utensils.
Stamping processing is a production technology that uses the power of conventional or special stamping equipment to directly subject the sheet to deformation forces and deform in the mold, thereby obtaining product parts of a certain shape, size and performance. Sheet materials, molds and equipment are the three elements of stamping processing. According to the stamping processing temperature, it is divided into hot stamping and cold stamping. The former is suitable for processing sheets with high deformation resistance and poor plasticity; the latter is performed at room temperature and is a commonly used stamping method for thin plates. It is one of the main methods of metal plastic processing (or pressure processing) and is also part of material forming engineering technology.
The mold used for stamping is called a stamping die, or die for short. Punch dies are special tools for batch processing of materials (metal or non-metal) into required stamping parts. Stamping dies are crucial in stamping. Without stamping dies that meet the requirements, batch stamping production will be difficult to carry out; without advanced stamping dies, advanced stamping processes cannot be realized. Stamping technology, molds, stamping equipment and stamping materials constitute the three elements of stamping processing. Only when they are combined with each other can stamping parts be produced.
